Scientific Excellence

The Macondo JWST School is a two-week international capacity-building workshop designed for graduate students and early-career researchers. We combine rigorous lectures on JWST instruments with hands-on data reduction tutorials and mentored research projects using public archival observations. This workshop provides a unique opportunity to explore the frontiers of exoplanet science, brown dwarf astronomy, and galaxy evolution within a prestigious academic environment.

Exoplanets

Investigating the formation, atmospheric composition, and habitability of worlds beyond our solar system through JWST spectroscopy and Imaging.

Brown Dwarfs

Studying the elusive boundary between stars and planets, focusing on the physics of substellar atmospheres, their variability and templates of exoplanets.

Galaxies & Cosmology

Exploring the large-scale structure of the universe, dark matter distribution, and the formation of massive galaxies through deep-field JWST observations.

Week 1: Foundations

The first week of the Macondo JWST School is dedicated to the foundational principles of astronomical data analysis. Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the James Webb Space Telescope's advanced instrumentation, focusing on the unique capabilities of NIRCam, NIRSpec, and MIRI.

Through a series of expert-led lectures and hands-on tutorials, students will master the essential data reduction pipelines required to process and interpret the complex observational data streams from the JWST archive.

Instrument Overview

A deep dive into the technical specifications and scientific objectives of the NIRCam, NIRSpec, and MIRI instruments.

Data Reduction

Hands-on tutorials covering the reduction pipeline, including flat-fielding, cosmic ray removal, and flux calibration.

Week 2: Discovery

The second week of the Macondo JWST School transitions from theory to active research. Participants will work on mentored projects and prepare for the closing symposium.

This phase emphasizes scientific inquiry and peer collaboration, culminating in a formal presentation of research findings at the international symposium.

Research Projects

Small research projects mentored by leading scientists, focusing on specific scientific themes such as Exoplanets, Brown Dwarfs, and Galaxy Evolution.

Team Mentoring

One-on-one mentoring sessions with senior researchers to refine research methodologies and scientific writing for publication.

Closing Symposium

A formal scientific symposium where participants present their research findings, fostering a vibrant exchange of ideas and discoveries.
